Socrates, Plato, and Puppies …

When you think about the great philosophers, who comes to mind?

Aristotle, Socrates, Epicurus, Confucius, Contrera???

Wait a minute, hold the phone, stop the presses, kill the power!!!!

Contrera??? What impact did he have on the world?

While the likes of Socrates and Plato may have changed the way we view the world, it is our personal philosophy that determines how happy we are in our current world.

Why? Because your personal philosophy is simply the culmination of your beliefs. What you believe about money, relationships, education, government, success, love, etc. determines the actions you take and therefore the results that you get. If you aren’t getting the results you want in your life … chances are you’re probably not all that happy.

What you choose to believe today,  in this moment,  has a far greater impact on your life than than what Socrates  may have said 2,480 years ago.

So what is your personal philosophy? What choices are you making in your life?

Below are 3 situations and 3 possible reactions that may help you to gain some clarity on your own personal philosophy:

1. When someone you love makes a mistake do you: A) Get angry and tell them to get there act together. B) Say “don’t worry about it, we all make mistakes.” C) Say “don’t worry about it, everyone makes mistakes” and then spend the next hour lecturing them on how they could avoid making mistakes in the future?

2. If someone shares bad news about a person that you really don’t like do you: A) Think to yourself … good they deserve what they get. B) Think to yourself even though you are not fond of them you still hope they are okay. C) Think to yourself better them than me!

3. When your driving and someone cuts you off do you: A) Slam on the horn and yell an obscenity. B) Smile and let it go. C) Yell, smile and give them the finger as you pass them.

If you answered B to all of the questions than chances are you have a healthy personal philosophy and are reasonably happy. If you answered everything but B to all 3 questions you might ask yourself … how’s that working for you? Are you truly happy?

Sometimes happiness comes down to having a personal philosophy that is based on enjoying the simple things in life and letting go of all the things that create frustration, angst, and that you don’t control .

Maybe the great philosopher Charles Schultz (the creator of Charlie Brown) was right when he said …

“Happiness is a warm puppy!”

I guess if you can’t lick ’em  … might as well join ’em!

L-O-V-E: Who You Are …

This week’s topic is love!

And before you get all mushy and start conjuring up images of Romeo and Juliet or trying to remember when Harry actually met Sally, I want you to stop and go find a mirror.

Now I want to invite you to look into the eyes of the person in the mirror and ask yourself this question:

Do I genuinely love myself … exactly the way that I am (yes this includes all of the spots, wrinkles, blemishes, lines, etc)?

We’ve all heard the saying,  you can’t give away something you don’t have.

If that’s true, then you can’t fully love someone else … until you love yourself.

I believe many of us consciously or unconsciously deep down inside struggle with the question … Am I ENOUGH?

And that question causes us to devalue our worth and the love of ourselves.

Here’s how it could be impacting you in the love department.

When  you don’t believe you’re enough, you don’t believe you’re lovable. And if you don’t believe you’re lovable … when someone tells you that they “love you” … you don’t believe them!

And it doesn’t matter how many times they say it .. you still don’t believe them! Being loved begins when you believe you are enough and that you deserve love.

So what would your life be like if you knew you were enough? How would your relationships be different if you knew you were loved … just the way you are?

As singer song writer James Taylor once said, “You have to choose whether to love yourself or not.”

Choose wisely and often …

Humor is a Funny Thing … Seriously!

As we approach the 4th of July we are already officially past the half way point through the year, I thought we would take a laughter break.

You may recall in the Jack Nicholson movie, The Shining that, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

That said, I thought I would share some of my favorite one-liners from two of my favorite comedians, Henny Youngman and Steven Wright.

You might be thinking, I don’t have time to laugh … actually you don’t have time not to!

Humor has been scientifically proven to improve mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

And to think … no co-pay and no deductible!

So here you go:

Henny Youngman:

  • A doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn’t pay his bill, so he gave him another six months.
  • A man goes to a psychiatrist. “Nobody listens to me!” The doctor says, “Next!”
  • My wife and I have the secret to making a marriage last. Two times a week, we go to a nice restaurant, a little wine, good food. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.
  • The Doctor says, “You’ll live to be 60!” “I AM 60!” “See, what did I tell you?”
  • Any married man should forget his mistakes, there’s no use in two people remembering the same thing.

Steven Wright:

  • I installed a skylight in my apartment… the people who live above me are furious!
  • I poured spot remover on my dog. Now he’s gone.
  • I think it’s wrong that only one company makes the game Monopoly.
  • My neighbor has a circular driveway… he can’t get out.
  • What’s another word for Thesaurus?
  • When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child… eventually.
  • “I’d kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.”
  • “Why are there five syllables in the word “monosyllabic”?”
  • “Do Roman paramedics refer to IV’s as ‘4’s’?”
  • “Is it possible to be totally partial?”

Some folks take themselves way too serious. They never take the time to relax, laugh, and to simply enjoy the moment.

We can get so stressed out over the little things in life that we actually make ourselves sick: ulcers, muscle tension in our necks, backs, and shoulders, and all sorts of ailments that are a result of too much stress on our bodies.

Remember to take time to laugh each day it can save your life … after all … laughter truly is the best medicine!

Doing What Matters Most … It’s as Easy as 3-4-5?

Have you ever gotten to the end of your day and had this realization …

 I didn’t really accomplish a “d–n” thing today!

So you grab your to-do list and write down what you did do …

And then check those items off your list so you felt like you actually accomplished something.

Okay let’s see …

  1. Stared at the wall for 45 minutes … check!
  2. Played Words with Friends ® for 1 hour in the morning … check!
  3. Stared at the Wall and Played Words with Friends ® for 1 more hour in the afternoon … check!

Yes, we’ve all been there, spent our precious time on tasks that don’t contribute to the results we really want. They simply keep us busy and give us a false sense of accomplishment.

So how do you stay focused on getting done what matters most?

Here’s 3 Easy Steps to Help:

  1. Get Clarity – First of all you have to be crystal clear about the results you need to get in your business. Believe it or not some folks are not clear about what they are responsible for?  Ask yourself: What is the end result that I need to produce? For example: Generating revenue, Creating websites that generate revenue, etc.)
  2. Define The Actions – Define what 3 actions will give you laser-like focus so you can accomplish those most important tasks. In my business, my 3 actions are:
    • Talk to people who need a Speaker, Coach or Consultant.
    • Talk with people who know someone who needs a Speaker, Coach, or Consultant.
    • Speak, Coach, or Consult, and be so “d–n” good that they want more or want to tell someone else about me.
  3. Apply The 3-4-5 System ™ – Commit to doing those 3 things for 4 hours a day 5 days per week. That’s it!

So are you game?

I dare you to try the 3-4-5 System ™ for just 1 week … and if you do I will promise you 3 things:

  1. You will be more productive.
  2. You will feel so much better about yourself and your results.
  3. You will have more time to spend playing Words With Friend ® (and you won’t feel guilty about it)

Oh … by the way … It’s Your Move!

Goals: Know When to Hold ’em and …

“You got to know when to hold ’em,  Know when to fold ’em, Know when to walk away, And know when to run.”

                          Kenny Rogers

Are you kidding me … you want me to fold on one of my goals?

I’m only into the 3rd week of the New Year!

I know what you’re thinking … if I drop one of my goals that means I’m giving up … quitting, folding like a cheap suit, laying down, and rolling over!

No, I’m not saying to give up.  I’m asking you to look at your 2012 goals list and ask yourself, “In order to have a successful year, do I have to accomplish ALL of  these goals?”

You see sometimes in our enthusiasm to make sure we have our best year ever, we can get a little over zealous with our goals. We make a list of 37 goals in our business life and 27 more  to accomplish in our personal life … and we never complete the list.

Yes, of course we all want to be successful!

And … wouldn’t it be better to focus on the 2 or 3 really important goals, instead of  getting frustrated because we didn’t accomplish the list of the 64 less important ones?

The old saying is true, “Sometimes less is more!”

Still not sure? Here’s a few ideas:

5 Clues That It Might Be Time To Fold One Of Your Goals?

  1. It’s been on your list since January 1st and you just noticed it today … for the first time.
  2. You wrote it down in a secret code and then burned the paper you wrote the key on so that no one could decipher it … including you!
  3. It’s the same goal that’s been on your list … for the last 10 years.
  4. Each morning you lay your list in the dog’s food dish hoping that the “dog will eat your homework!”
  5. You see it on your list everyday and you’re still wondering … who on earth put THAT there?

Still not sure?

If you’ve answered yes to 2 or more of the above … maybe … just maybe … you need to let that one go.

Besides, you can always tell everyone that your Mom accidentally threw it in the garbage!

WANT YOUR BEST YEAR EVER … ?

Want Your ...

How many years before have you sat here on this very day …. yes, a few days before the first of the year thinking about how next year was going to be better!

You think about all of the things you want to do differently and yet deep down inside you have doubts and uncertainties.

Many of us have a great desire to change and yet we don’t have a system in place to keep us consistent and focused.

Even more true is that many of us say we need to change and yet when it comes time to making a commitment and being held accountable we simply back off.

We believe that we can do it all on our own even though we never have been completely or even partially successful in the past.

What if you could insure that next year was really your best year ever?

3 Questions To Ask Yourself:

  1. Do you want to be more productive than you ever have been in a single year?
  2. Are you willing to commit to a process that will change your life? Really?
  3. Would you be willing to make a small investment in yourself so that you can achieve your best year ever … next year?
