10 Things You Need to Know About Purpose …

Every since the beginning of time humans have searched to find their purpose in life.

Thousands of  books have been written and hundreds of thousand of speeches, lectures, and discussions have been given on the topic of purpose.

And yet, how many people do you know, if asked, could succinctly complete the following sentence, “My purpose in life is to …”

So I thought I would share a few insights I have gleaned over the years regarding this life altering topic.

 10 Things I’ve Learned About Purpose:

  1. Without purpose, people drift from one thing to the next or they wake up one day feeling trapped in a situation or place they don’t want to be in.
  2. Purpose leads to clarity and clarity leads to focus … focused energy, focused actions, and focused results … and that leads to happiness.
  3. When a person loses their purpose in life they soon atrophy and their desire to live diminishes. (think about someone you know who retired and lost their desire to live).
  4. Finding your purpose in life doesn’t mean you have to find a cure for cancer or quit your job and move to Africa and work for Feed The Children.
  5. Discovering your purpose begins with being crystal clear about your strengths, talents, gifts, and brilliance and then showing up with them in all you do.
  6. You will never find your purpose in life if you spend your time watching Honey Boo-Boo, Redneck Island, Pawn Stars and the other garbage on TV.
  7. You will know you’re on the right path if when you embrace your talents, strengths, and gifts and others begin to consistently recognize you for them.
  8. The number one cause of Death of Purpose is fear … fear of success, failure, loss, dying, surviving, disappointing, poverty, etc.
  9. The single most important factor in finding your purpose is Belief, believing that you were put here on this earth for a reason and discovering that reason needs to be the number one priority in your life. Living out your purpose needs to be the second priority.
  10. Discovering your purpose is an inside job, it already exists inside of you, you just have to clear out the old beliefs, lies, and junk that are preventing you from seeing it.

Socrates, Plato, and Puppies …

When you think about the great philosophers, who comes to mind?

Aristotle, Socrates, Epicurus, Confucius, Contrera???

Wait a minute, hold the phone, stop the presses, kill the power!!!!

Contrera??? What impact did he have on the world?

While the likes of Socrates and Plato may have changed the way we view the world, it is our personal philosophy that determines how happy we are in our current world.

Why? Because your personal philosophy is simply the culmination of your beliefs. What you believe about money, relationships, education, government, success, love, etc. determines the actions you take and therefore the results that you get. If you aren’t getting the results you want in your life … chances are you’re probably not all that happy.

What you choose to believe today,  in this moment,  has a far greater impact on your life than than what Socrates  may have said 2,480 years ago.

So what is your personal philosophy? What choices are you making in your life?

Below are 3 situations and 3 possible reactions that may help you to gain some clarity on your own personal philosophy:

1. When someone you love makes a mistake do you: A) Get angry and tell them to get there act together. B) Say “don’t worry about it, we all make mistakes.” C) Say “don’t worry about it, everyone makes mistakes” and then spend the next hour lecturing them on how they could avoid making mistakes in the future?

2. If someone shares bad news about a person that you really don’t like do you: A) Think to yourself … good they deserve what they get. B) Think to yourself even though you are not fond of them you still hope they are okay. C) Think to yourself better them than me!

3. When your driving and someone cuts you off do you: A) Slam on the horn and yell an obscenity. B) Smile and let it go. C) Yell, smile and give them the finger as you pass them.

If you answered B to all of the questions than chances are you have a healthy personal philosophy and are reasonably happy. If you answered everything but B to all 3 questions you might ask yourself … how’s that working for you? Are you truly happy?

Sometimes happiness comes down to having a personal philosophy that is based on enjoying the simple things in life and letting go of all the things that create frustration, angst, and that you don’t control .

Maybe the great philosopher Charles Schultz (the creator of Charlie Brown) was right when he said …

“Happiness is a warm puppy!”

I guess if you can’t lick ’em  … might as well join ’em!



An Opportunity of a Lifetime

Webster defines op•por•tu•ni•ty as:

1. an appropriate or favorable time or occasion:
2. a situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal.

So what might be stopping you from taking advantage of a favorable time or occasion?

Maybe you’ve heard this before …

I would … if it were only the right time.

I would if the economy, situation, recovery, timing, circumstances, or situation were … right!

When I reflect back on some of the greatest opportunities in my life,  it always seemed like at the time, it was never the perfect time to take action.

February 8, 2000. I am sitting on a beach with my mentor overlooking the Sea of Cortez, it’s a turning point in my life.

I want to be a professional speaker and yet I am afraid of unlocking the golden handcuffs that had me locked in to a highly paid job that I had outgrown.

My mentor says to me, “So when will you leave your job and follow your dream?”

“September …  I will resign in September,” I reply.

He asks again only this time louder, almost shouting, “So when will you leave your job and follow your dream?”

I was shaking, I was scared. He was challenging me to walk away from my identity, my security, and everything I had worked toward for 17 years!

23 days later I resigned and my life has never been the same!

And why am I telling you this?

Chances are you have a dream or an idea that you haven’t acted on … yet!

Maybe you hear that inner voice whispering that you are not living the life that you want to live or being the person you know you can be.

Do you find yourself saying, “I will jump when the economy turns around, the election is over, I feel more secure, the stars are aligned, or when things feel more right?”

The truth is …  there is no perfect time, right time, safe time, etc.

There is now! Right now!

Right now is the perfect time to make that move, to start that business, to play big, to take a leap of faith, knowing you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams.

NOW is an opportunity of a lifetime … you just have to open your eyes and let go of your fear.

So are you ready for your opportunity of a lifetime?



How to Increase Your Time & Energy R-O-I

I was flying home after attending an amazing conference, the National Speakers Association Annual Convention. For the last 4 days I have been expanding my knowledge base by studying and listening to some of the best speakers in my profession.

As I poured over my multiple pages of notes on the flight home, I came to the realization that not one single idea matters … until I take action to implement it into my business.

It’s been said that knowledge is power. If that is true, then we should all be powerful beyond measure. The internet allows us access to more information now, than at any other time in the history of the world!

The truth is that most of us possess more knowledge than we need to be wildly successful. And yet … so many people wallow in mediocrity.

Why? Because they fail to consistently execute on the actions that really make a difference in their businesses. It is easy to get distracted by the “other” things that dilute their results.

So that got me thinking …

What if … you agreed to limit your focus on the 3 most productive ideas or actions each and every day?

I know what you’re thinking … 3 …. just 3 … you mean like 1, 2, 3 and stop? Are you serious?

The key to getting a higher return on investment (R-O-I) of your time and energy (T & E) is to consistently take action on the most important and impactful tasks.

Here’s how …

7 Steps for Increasing your Time & Energy  R-O-I:

  1. Make a complete list of all of the things you want and need to accomplish for today.
  2. Mark a letter D next to all the things you can delegate, along with the  person’s name who can take ownership of the task (delegate it)
  3. Prioritize the remaining tasks in order of importance by placing an A, B, or C, in front of each task according to its importance (you should have multiple A’s, B’s, and C’s) If you have all A’s you have a serious problem … start over!
  4. Now rank the A’s in order according to their impact and importance. For example A1, A2, A3, A4, etc. You should only have one number for each A. Then do the same for the B’s (B1, B2, etc. and the C’s).
  5. Now as Nike says … just DO IT! Start at A1 and work your way down the list.
  6. Complete this exercise daily for the next 2 weeks.
  7. At the end of 2 weeks … do it for another 2 weeks!

The idea here is that if you are consistently taking action on the 3 most important tasks each and every day, the most important tasks will continuously rise to the top. The less important tasks will be pushed to the bottom or need to be moved off the list.

And when you do … 

Not only will you accomplish more than you ever have, you will experience the ultimate R-O-I on your time and energy.

Yes knowledge can be power … ONLY when it is combined with ACTION.

When I Grow Up … Making Your Dreams Come True!

Do you remember when you were a kid and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up?

“I want to be a … fireman, policeman, a nurse, a superhero, etc.”

So what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was 7-years-old I wanted to be an entertainer, a stand-up comic. My parents and I would listen to Pat Cooper albums and we would laugh hysterically.

Pat’s real name was Pasquale Caputo and he would talk about growing up in an Italian Family. It didn’t matter if I understood the jokes or not … if Mom and Dad were laughing, I was laughing too.

When I was 16-years-old, I wanted to be the drummer for Van Halen. It didn’t matter that I didn’t play the drums, I dreamed of getting an emergency phone call from Eddie Van Halen telling me that Alex got sick and they desperately needed me!

What is it about children and dreams?

When you’re a kid your dreams and ideas are unlimited, you don’t care if it’s realistic or not, you simply believe you can be anything you want to be.

When a group 5-year-olds were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, the number one response … a super-hero.

What is it about adults and dreams?

At some point most adults give up on their dreams and end up settling. The excitement and aliveness that once filled them seems to fade away each year that passes. Almost as if time is slowly erasing the image of their dreams they painted so many years ago.

A recent Salary.com survey found that only 16% of the people surveyed said they were living their childhood dreams. They went on to say that 60% of those surveyed still wished they could fulfill their dreams!

So what about you?

Maybe your dream to be a ballerina or a policeman changed over the years. The core question here isn’t whether you actually became a super-hero or not … the real questions are:

  1. Are you happy?
  2. Do you love what you do?
  3. Do you love the person you’ve become?
If the answer to any of those question is “no” or “maybe” here are 7 steps that will help you:

7 Steps to Realizing Your Dreams:

  1. Ask yourself: What did I want to be when I grew up?
  2. Look for any correlations between what you wanted to be and who you are today.
  3. Write down on a sheet of paper 10 things you love to do?
  4. Look for any gaps between who you wanted to be and who you are.
  5. Look for any gaps between what you do and what you love to do?
  6. Write down one action you can and will take today to close that gap (make a phone call, an appointment, or put on a cape and run around the house).
  7. Commit to doing one of the things you love to do once a week for one month and watch what happens to your happiness meter.

No, I never became a stand-up comic or the drummer for Van Halen and yet … I love what I do … I cannot imagine doing anything else.

Sometimes I get chills thinking that I get paid to be a professional speaker and to help other realize their potential. It’s like I’m living a dream!

Oh and one last thing … I have a drum set in my living room that I play whenever I want to feel like a rock star …

I’m sure Eddie will call … eventually!

1000’s of people waited in line to be some of the 1st  people on the planet to own one!

To those of you still waiting in line … just in case you’re bored and want to GETTA little something extra for your efforts …

Life (Yes a real one that includes some of the following … )

Job (You obviously have too much time on your hands)

Purpose (Something bigger than yourself that goes beyond wasting your time in a line waiting to buy an iPad, iPhone, iTouch, etc.)

Pet (Yes, it is a living breathing companion  and you don’t plug it in)

Friend (Preferably not someone you just met in line)

Need A Lift?

“I dare you to move …                           I dare you to move,”

Have you ever had an amazing day where you felt like everything was going your way?

Until it wasn’t …

You get the first bit of not-so-positive news and you say, “No worries… this must be happening for a reason … right?”

And then another not-so-positive event comes up behind it and you say, “Hmmmmm … what the heck am I doing to attract this stuff?”

And then you get hit one more time with another frustrating event, an event that in-and-of- itself, wouldn’t be an issue at all.

And because it is the third not-so positive one today you collapse under what feels like the weight of the world that has just landed … on top of you!

Once your down there the questions start coming from that little voice inside your head … Why me? Why today? What else can possibly go wrong?

And then it takes a wicked turn … What’s wrong with me? You know maybe I’m just not X enough … or Y enough or …. XYZ enough?

Oh my God … I’m not L-M-N-O-P enough either!

And then from some place inside a voice screams out … STOPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!

Gut Check Time

Okay what would I tell a Coaching client at this moment in time?

I would say …ask yourself these 3 questions:

  1. What are you afraid of losing? (Fear is about loss and it’s obvious I am in a place of fear)
  2. What is the truth (Knowing 93% of the things I worry about never happen)
  3. What needs to happen right now? (What action do I need to take get moving forward and back on track)

Answering these questions will move you from an emotional state of reaction in the future and into a more logical state of reason in the present. In other words from victim to victor!

Here’s what I know:
  1. If I lose a deal, a client, a gig I will find more because the world is a place of abundance … there is always more!
  2. If plans don’t unfold exactly the way I want them to I can still have a great time … as long as I stay present in the moment and open myself up to greater possibilities or gifts!
  3. When I trust (embrace) the process exactly as it unfolds … I am free! Free to stand back up and move forward!

And one last thought …

Never ever forget who you are (your authentic self)!

Never ever forget what you do (your mission)!

Never ever forget why you are here (your purpose)!

Remember those things … and you will always get back up!
